Editorial Guidelines

Our Mission

ShrewdMommy is an independent digital parenting publication created to help parents, caregivers and families make informed, practical decisions. We publish approachable guidance on pregnancy, baby care, parenting, family life and everyday products. Our goal is not to tell every family what to do; it is to help readers understand their options and make choices that fit their circumstances.

Our Editorial Priorities

Every article should be useful, understandable, accurate enough for its purpose and respectful of the fact that families have different needs, budgets, cultures and support systems. We prioritize clarity over jargon, practical context over empty trends and transparency over exaggerated claims.

  • Accuracy: We aim to use reliable, current information and clearly distinguish fact, opinion and product recommendation.
  • Usefulness: We answer real questions and offer practical next steps rather than publishing content solely to attract clicks.
  • Independence: Advertising and affiliate relationships do not control our editorial judgments.
  • Respect: We avoid shame-based or one-size-fits-all advice and recognize that there is no single perfect parenting experience.
  • Transparency: We disclose affiliate relationships, explain our methods and correct material errors.

How We Select Topics

Topics are selected based on common reader questions, changes in parenting guidance, seasonal needs, product research needs, search behavior, reader feedback and gaps in our existing content. We consider whether a topic can be addressed responsibly, whether it is relevant to our audience and whether we can provide enough context for a reader to understand the answer.

Research and Source Standards

Our editors use a source-first approach. Depending on the topic, we may consult government health agencies, recognized medical organizations, academic publications, professional associations, manufacturer instructions, product manuals, retailer information and reputable primary sources. For health and safety topics, we give greater weight to authoritative guidance and avoid treating social-media claims or anecdotal opinions as evidence.

For products, we review manufacturer specifications, safety information, warranties, materials, instructions, price and availability, credible third-party coverage and relevant customer feedback. Customer reviews can identify practical patterns, but they do not replace product-safety guidance or manufacturer instructions.

Writing and Editing Standards

Articles are written to be skimmable, calm and useful. We use clear headings, explanatory language and context that helps readers understand why a recommendation or consideration matters. Claims should be specific and supportable. We avoid fear-based language, guarantees, sensational medical claims and unnecessary product hype.

Before publication, content is reviewed for clarity, structure, factual consistency, link relevance, disclosure placement and obvious omissions. Articles may be updated after publication when meaningful information changes.

Health, Pregnancy and Baby Content

Pregnancy, baby and family-health topics require particular care. We aim to describe general information in a way that is easy to understand, while reminding readers that online content cannot assess an individual’s symptoms, medical history or baby’s needs. We encourage readers to contact qualified healthcare professionals for diagnosis, treatment, urgent concerns or individualized advice.

Unless an article explicitly identifies a licensed healthcare professional as a reviewer, it has not been formally medically reviewed. See our Medical Information & Review Policy for more detail.

Product Recommendations

ShrewdMommy may publish product reviews, comparisons, “best” lists and buying guides. We explain our approach in How We Review Products. We aim to recommend products for a defined use case rather than imply that one product is universally best for every family. Safety, fit, age appropriateness, manufacturer instructions and current recalls should always be checked by the reader before use.

Advertising, Sponsorships and Affiliate Relationships

We display advertising and may earn commissions through affiliate links. Revenue supports the operation of the website but does not grant advertisers, retailers or affiliate partners authority over our opinions, rankings or editorial conclusions. A product may be included because it is relevant and useful; it is not included simply because it offers a commission.

When content is sponsored or a material relationship could affect how a reader understands the content, we will disclose that relationship clearly.

Use of AI and Editorial Oversight

ShrewdMommy may use digital tools, including AI-assisted tools, to support brainstorming, outlining, research organization, grammar, formatting or workflow efficiency. These tools do not replace editorial judgment. We do not intend to publish automatically generated material without human review, editing and responsibility for the final content.

AI tools can be wrong, incomplete or outdated. Editors are responsible for checking important claims, refining language, adding context and ensuring the final article reflects ShrewdMommy’s editorial standards.

Updating Existing Articles

We periodically review articles when medical guidance changes, products are discontinued, safety standards change, better information becomes available, a reader identifies a concern or a topic becomes newly relevant. Updating a date does not mean every sentence was rewritten; it indicates that the article was reviewed or materially revised at that time.

Corrections and Reader Feedback

We welcome credible feedback. If a reader believes an article contains a material error, outdated detail, broken link or missing context, they can contact us through the Contact page. We review substantiated concerns and make corrections where appropriate. See our Corrections Policy for the process we follow.

Our Commitment

Trust is more valuable than a quick click. ShrewdMommy is committed to making information clearer, recommendations more transparent and content more useful over time. We will continue to improve our standards as evidence, safety guidance, products and reader needs evolve.
